Why Your Boiler Keeps Locking Out (And How I fix It)
You wake up. It's freezing. You check the boiler - red light, fault code, no heat. You reset it. It works. For a day. Then it locks out again. Sound familiar? This the most common call I get as a South London breakdown specialist.
What "Lockout" Actually Means
A lockout is your boiler's safety mode. Something is wrong, and the boiler shuts down to prevent danger. But when the fault is intermittent, it's a nightmare to diagnose. Most engineers swap parts and hope. I don't.
- Intermittent lockouts = most misdiagnosed faults.
- Often not the boiler itself - could be gas pressure, flue, or system issues.
- Factory-trained engineers (Vaillant, Worcester, Ideal) know the real causes.
The Three Hidden Causes
- Gas Supply fluctuation - pressure drops, boiler locks out. Need a gas rate test.
- Condensate pipe frozen or blocked - common - in winter. Easy fix.
- PCB (printed circuit board) failing intermittently - only shows fault when cold or warm
I use forensic diagnosis - multimeter, flue gas analyser, and years of commercial heating experience. I don't guess. I prove the fault, then fix it. Once.
